Kolkata Set to Become Home to India’s Largest EV Charging Hub – Second Biggest in the World After China
In a monumental leap towards a greener future, Kolkata is all set to host India’s largest Electric Vehicle (EV) charging hub, positioning itself as a national leader in clean transportation infrastructure. The upcoming mega EV charging station will not only be the biggest in India but will also become the second-largest in the world, following China’s massive EV charging network.
The ambitious project is being developed at New Town, Rajarhat, a fast-developing satellite township in eastern Kolkata known for its smart city initiatives. Backed by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the hub is expected to feature over 100 high-capacity EV chargers, including both fast and ultra-fast charging facilities to cater to cars, buses, and commercial vehicles.
A Green Revolution on the Move
This development marks a turning point in India’s transition towards clean mobility. With the rising adoption of electric vehicles—fueled by increasing fuel prices, government subsidies, and growing environmental consciousness—urban centers are racing to set up reliable charging infrastructure. Kolkata’s EV hub aims to not only address the growing demand for charging stations but also to serve as a model for other metro cities.
Officials involved in the project revealed that the charging station will be equipped with smart energy management systems, renewable energy integration (primarily solar), and real-time tracking features for users. The initiative will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the city and support West Bengal’s state EV policy, which targets 10 lakh electric vehicles on roads by 2030.
Public and Private Synergy
The mega hub is being developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with strong participation from private EV infrastructure companies and power distribution agencies. The first phase of the project, which will roll out by the end of 2025, will focus on servicing electric buses and fleet vehicles, followed by expansion for private EV owners.
Speaking on the development, an NKDA spokesperson said, “Kolkata is embracing the future of mobility. Our EV charging hub will set new standards for sustainability, scalability, and smart urban planning. This will not only support local transport but also boost tourism, investment, and employment in green sectors.”
Why This Matters
With India’s push for net-zero emissions by 2070, large-scale infrastructure like this plays a critical role. According to the Ministry of Power, India requires more than 46,000 EV charging stations by 2030 to meet its green mobility goals. Kolkata’s new hub is a giant stride in that direction.
What’s Next?
Construction work is expected to commence in mid-2025, with partial operations to begin by early 2026. The hub will also include public amenities, EV maintenance zones, and dedicated parking spaces, transforming it into a comprehensive green mobility center.
As Kolkata takes the lead, this mega EV charging hub is poised to become a national symbol of innovation, climate responsibility, and future-ready urban living.
